Artist Biography

Stephen Hayes was born in Corpus Christi Texas in 1956 and raised in the midwest town of Joplin Missouri. Immediately after high school he hitchhiked down the shoot of Hwy 66 into Southern California. After one year in Los Angeles he attended college in Santa Cruz CA. with a major in liberal arts. He later lived in and explored the Hawaiian Islands and the wilds of Fairbanks Alaska.

In 1981 Stephen settled in Sonoma County CA. and founded a highly successful business enterprise, Trade Services International. After seven years the corporation was sold and he realized an opportunity to live and study in the classic antelier studios of Carrara and Florence Italy. There he studied art history, drawing and sculpture. After one year he relocated to Marin County Ca. and worked in art galleries as well as owning one and founding Artvision, a computerized database of artworks for sale through various galleries and locations.

After further adventures in world travel and studying with the spiritual teacher Andrew Cohen , he then shared a studio and began to learn abstract art with Zen,
a genuine artist and E-businessman now living in New Zealand. Later he met and studied with another true Artspirit, Jerry Fresia of San Francisco. Jerry taught and shared with him the method of French Impressionism as was taught to him by his teacher, William Schultz. Founder of the American Impressionist Society, Schultz studied with Robert Brackman and others who in turn worked closely with preeminent artists such as Robert Henri, William Merrit Chase, and Charles Hawthorn. This fine art method has been passed from teacher to student from the original Impressionists down to him today.

Since 1996 he resides in a 105 year old converted Victorian Church in downtown MIll Valley Ca. There he has a home and studio as well as the Artspirit Gallery.
